Its been a wonderful two weeks since I began volunteering with Malaysian Care. I've been teaching Myanmar refugee and Orang Asli children the English language. To be honest, I was extremely anxious about the Myanmar group, I didn't know what to expect from them. Then heck i thought, would I live up to Their expectations? Will they like me? Would I be good enough(considering I'm pretty klutzorrific)? Could I bring good variety every week?
The language barrier is definitely a challenge when it comes to teaching the Myanmar kids but somehow it's been alright :) Every week I try to enrich their learning experience with games, singing, dancing and acting. Thankfully, from the feedback I've received from the Myanmar teachers & Malaysian Care staff, the kids are enjoying it very much. To my delight, I am enriched every week as well.
'Nan dam maw ' is 'how are you' in Chin (a Myanmar dialect).
Last Tuesday, I was teaching them how to name the human body parts, ie the face, eyes etc. Some of them are a little more advanced than the rest and so when I was pointing at my lips, a few of them said "KISS!". Hehe. They are really cute and cheeky. We're hoping to have a party next week. I'm sure they'd love that. Will try to keep you guys posted =) and hopefully upload some pictures.
